In a sweet Instagram video from user @spudsymutt, a rescue dog named Spud’s owners introduce him to four baby chicks as “our new spring additions to our current flock.” At first, he keeps his distance, but the video shows how the chicks start to grow on the Pit Bull. The dog goes from being curious and trying to figure out what exactly is going on in the brooder to an unremitting dad to the baby chicks in the video — and it is one of the most heartwarming scenes on the internet.

Dog bonds with baby chicks from a distance in heartwarming video

The video explains the context with the on-screen caption that sounds like a suggestion, reading, “May you give a dog some baby chicks.” And to convince you further, the video shows Spud posted up beside the brooder, checking in on the chicks and staying close as if it is his job, as the caption reads, “The day Spud became a dad to four baby chicks!”

What surprised the rescue Pit Bull‘s owner most was who the chicks seemed to trust. In the caption, they revealed, “So funny enough, as much as I tried to bond with the chicks, they have become pretty skittish of us. Yet when Spud is anywhere near them, they’re perfectly fine.”

This is mostly because a dog transitions from being alert and cautious to assuming a protective role once they have had repeated peaceful exposure to a new member of the family. And for Spud, a calm brooder was the perfect new mission he could take care of.

Besides, Spud takes the assignment seriously. In the caption, his owner wrote, “Any time he hears them in any sort of distress (giant hand changing out their water,) Spud comes running from the next room!”

Viewers were all-in on the dad narrative, with one joking, “Not the step dad, but the dad that stepped up.” Another called him “Best daddy…just watching his chicks making sure they’re safe,” while a third user noted it was the “Circle of care ??.”
